When Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal and replacement is for insulation that can no longer do its job: soaked by a roof leak, flattened and soiled by rodents or raccoons, moldy from a damp crawl space, or soaked after a storm. In the Savannah area, hurricanes and tropical storms are part of the picture: Matthew in 2016, Irma in 2017, and Debby and Helene in 2024 all affected the city. After roof or water damage, wet insulation in attics and under floors is a common leftover.
Signs it is time
- Stains or sagging on ceilings below the attic.
- Musty smells in rooms over a crawl space.
- Droppings, tunnels or nests in attic insulation.
- Batts hanging from the floor joists or lying on the ground.
- Insulation that stayed wet after a leak or storm.
- Plans for spray foam where old material is in the way.
How we remove it
Loose attic insulation comes out with a commercial vacuum that sends it through a hose into large bags outside, so it does not travel through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. We seal off the work area and protect the path from the attic hatch to the door. Pest-soiled material is bagged and the area is cleaned before new insulation goes in.
Fix the cause first
If a roof leak, plumbing drip or animal entry caused the damage, that has to be fixed before new insulation goes in. We point out what we find and, for pest problems, recommend a pest control company handle entry points and any treatment.
Spray foam removal
Removing spray foam is slow, hand work, and it costs more than removing loose insulation. Fixr lists $1.50 to $3 per square foot and up to about $5 when it has to be chipped off by hand. We remove failed or badly installed foam when it is necessary and explain the cost up front.
Asbestos
Some older homes contain vermiculite insulation, a pebbly gray-brown material, which can contain asbestos. We do not disturb it. If we see it, we stop and advise testing and, if needed, a licensed abatement contractor.
Putting it back
After removal we air seal, then reinstall insulation to the right level for the space: blown-in or foam in the attic, closed-cell under raised floors, or a sealed and insulated crawl space. Get a free estimate

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions
Does wet insulation need to be replaced?
Usually. Batts and loose fill lose much of their value when soaked and can grow mold if they stay damp. Small, quickly dried areas are sometimes fine; we check.
Will insurance pay for insulation removal after a storm?
That depends on your policy and the cause. We can give you a written scope and price to send to your insurer.
Do I need to leave the house during removal?
Not usually for attic vacuuming, since the material goes straight outside. We seal off the work area.
Can you remove insulation with rodent droppings?
Yes. We bag it, clean the area and reinstall, and suggest a pest company seal entry points first.
